Environment

Most of our environmental work falls into one of two broad categories: climate change work with organizations that work collaboratively with businesses, and natural resource assessments of national parks in the United States.
- Helped plan and implement the Northeast Business Climate Collaborative, a World Resources Institute project bringing together service and retail companies in the Northeastern U.S. to understand climate issues, greenhouse gas inventories, and how to reduce emissions.
- Researched the state of natural resources in several national parks for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) State of the Parks program. Applied a scientific methodology and ratings system to assess resources including air quality, water quality, threatened and endangered species, invasive species, and other measures, at Glacier Bay, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Canyonlands, and Big Bend National Parks. Currently working on an assessment of the interplay of natural and cultural resources at the Vicksburg Civil War battlefield.
- Assisted the Global Greengrants Fund with developing a definition of social entrepreneurship, applying that definition to its grantees, and developing new tools and resources for these people and organizations to further Greengrants’ goal of assisting people working to meet the broadest needs of society and environment in developing countries.
- Created and delivered half day workshops to office based organizations demonstrating how they and their constituents can play a role in combating climate change by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Workshops were based on Working 9 to 5 on Climate Change, a World Resources Institute publication.
- Researched, wrote, and assisted with planning of climatebiz.com, addressing climate change issues for a corporate audience, for Business for Social Responsibility and the Green Business Network.
- Wrote a series of white papers for Business for Social Responsibility for a corporate audience on energy efficiency, renewable energy, green product design, and sustainable business practices.
Because of John's background in environmental work he also serves on the board of Colorado Wild, a statewide public lands advocacy organization. Colorado Wild works throughout the forested high country of the Southern Rocky Mountains to protect and restore the habitat of native plants and animals.
