Online Education

We assist organizations that are using technology to increase educational opportunities and outcomes. Our work and consultants have been cited on NBC Nightly News, and in the New York Times and Education Week, among other publications. We have presented at numerous conferences including the Virtual School Symposium of the North American Council for Online Learning, the Technology and Leadership Conference of the National School Boards Association, and the National Education Computing Conference. Our recent work includes:
- Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning, funded and guided by the Texas Education Agency, Wyoming Department of Education, Clark County School District, Illinois Virtual HIgh School, Connections Academy, Virtual High School, and Florida Virtual School, is the leading annual online education policy report. The fourth annual Keeping Pace will be published in 2007.
- A National Primer on K-12 Online Learning, written for the North American Council for Online Learning and available on NACOL's website, explains the basics of K12 online learning for educators, policymakers, parents, and students.
- The Trujillo Commission Report on Online Education: Final Findings and Recommendations, funded by the Donnell-Kay Foundation, made recommendations for online education policy changes in Colorado. The recommendations were passed into law in May 2007.
Other clients and projects include:
- The State of Online Learning in California, published in September of 2006 by University of California College Prep Program and the California ad-hoc elearning committee, provides an introduction to online learning in California and explores issues of policy and practice.
- Program evaluations for the Illinois Virtual High School and Idaho Digital Learning Academy.
- Working with the high school members of the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education to help them implement and use MITE's high quality online courses and content.
- Project development and management for a series of studies into the effectiveness of K-12 online education for the North Central Regional Educational Lab, resulting in the synthesis analysis A Synthesis of New Research on K-12 Online Learning, written by Rosina Smith, Tom Clark, and Bob Blomeyer.
- eCollege and North American Council for Online Learning: Developed tracks and speakers for the Virtual High School conference in 2003 and 2004, working with the VHS conference advisory board.
- Colorado State Legislature: As a consultant to the Colorado Department of Education, researched, wrote and presented a series of briefs on K12 online learning in Colorado for two committees of the state legislature; issues covered included costs and funding of online education, technology, quality of courses, and program management.
- North American Council for Online Learning: Planned and facilitated meetings of the strategic planning committee and board of directors of this national K12 online learning association.
- The University of California College Prep Initiative: Researched and co-wrote The California Virtual School Report: A National Survey of Virtual Education Practice and Policy with Recommendations for the State of California, 2002, to help UCCP and the state of California consider issues in creation of a statewide online education program.
- Colorado Department of Education: Worked with the Colorado Department of Education’s E-Learning Task Force to create Findings and Recommendations for a Colorado Statewide Online Learning Program.
- Assisted the Colorado Online School Consortium, and a group of schools and districts around the state, in creating a proposal to the Colorado Department of Education for development of a statewide online learning program, Colorado Online Learning.
